EMG set up EMGdotART Foundation [in 2012] – the first art and culture foundation established by a Chinese enterprise, to have a permanent gallery and headquarters in the heart of Venice, Italy.
Taking place on the ground floor the historic Palazzo Zen 禅宫 – newly renovated by Chinese architectural studio O-OFFICE 源计划 工作室 – ADAPTATION 应变 – selected as one of 21 Collateral Events – is curated by Marino Folin & MovingCities. Presenting a profession in progress, the exhibition features recently completed projects, some even under construction [others on research-phase] – by 11 Chinese architectural practices – through the media of photography, architectural models, sketches, design objects, reels and newly commissioned audio-visuals.

ADAPTATION 应变－architecture and change in China 中国的建筑和变化 MovingCities has been a little away, a bit absent, yet adapting ourselves to new horizons and cities. Today, we’re pleased to announce that together with prof. Marino Folin we are curating an exhibition around the concept of ‘adaptation, architecture and change in China‘. Selected as one of 21 Collateral Events that will take place alongside the other official exhibitions during the 14th International Architecture Exhibition [June 7 – 23 November 2014, Venice], ‘adaptation’ presents a profession and construction culture in progress, in China. The exhibition will take place at Palazzo Zen 禅宫, a cultural venue of EMGdotART Foundation, newly renovated by Chinese architectural studio O-OFFICE 源计划 工作室. In few days time, the 2013 WestBund Biennial in Shanghai 上海 will close its doors. While MovingCities attended the opening ceremony on October 20, we went for a re-visit last week. That day, we found that several pavillions, including the main exhibition hall, were already shut down [and that one week prior to the official end]. We experienced a new type of event. In contrast with celebrated and well-communicated pre-openings, why not include the silent pre-closure as part of the program as well? In June 2013, ABITARE China magazine invited MovingCities to guest edit its summer issue on the topic of (re)Design Heritage – Strategies of Urban Renewal and the Chinese City. We took this opportunity to address one of the most urgent issues to discuss when dealing with the urban, architectural, cultural, social and economical development of the city of Beijing 北京: heritage, preservation, adaptive strategies and the hutong 胡同. Join us tomorrow, April 16 – 7pm at chi K11 art space [chi K11艺术空间] in Xintiandi for a public panel related to the DEFAULT 13 project [see MovingCities announcement].

The fourth installment of the 2012/13 “Shanghai State of Affairs” lecture series by Bert de Muynck at the HKU Shanghai Study Center is dealing with ‘Architectural Practice before and after the 2010 Shanghai World Expo‘. Invited speaker this Tuesday is Igor Peraza – Director Shanghai Office Miralles Tagliabue EMBT – who will not only talk about his professional experience of practicing in Shanghai 上海, but bring these in relation with past experiences in Japan during the 1980s.

MovingCities is pleased to further the call for participation to DEFAULT 13 Masterclass residency in Lecce [Puglia Region in Southern Italy]. Presented by RAMDOM & Arthub Asia, and taking place from September 17th to 26th 2013, DEFAULT 13 focuses on the role and perspectives of public art and its implications for the social, urban context as a tool for socio-cultural transformation. Eighteen creatives and artists [9 from Asia and 9 from Europe], selected through an international open call, will be given the opportunity to discuss and try to answer the question “What is next in art, cities and regeneration?”
