Palazzo Zen 禅宫 [GoogleMap] is located in Venice, Cannaregio district, close to Fondamente Nuove and Campo dei Gesuiti. Built between 1530-1550, the residence was home to one of Venice’s great trading and navigating families – the Zen family. The design of the palace is attributed to the collaborative efforts of Francesco Zen and Sebastiano Serlio [1475-1554], the renowned author of the treatise ‘The Seven Books of Architecture.’

ADAPTATION - architecture & change in China | Palazzo Zen, 2014
ADAPTATION - architecture & change in China | Palazzo Zen, 2014

If the fleeting fascination for fundamentals during the upcoming 14th International Architecture Exhibition [June 7 – 23 November 2014, Venice] will deal and try to understand the basic principles that create architecture; than, ADAPTATION – architecture and change in China 应变——中国的建筑和变化 focuses on the flexible framework that makes architecture (in China) possible.

As a collateral event of the 14th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, curators Marino Folin & MovingCities created ADAPTATION 应变 as a unique exhibition, providing a critical and timely insight and perspective on the changing understanding of contemporary Chinese architecture and its independent professionals. Featuring recent projects and urban research studies by recognized contemporary Chinese architects, as well supported by design, photography and short-movie documentaries – ADAPTATION 应变 presents an unique exhibition showing a culture and profession undergoing profound change in the world’s largest developing country.

ADAPTATION 应变 introduces and interprets an important moment in time and shows, how across different generations, Chinese architects develop innovative strategies when faced with constraints imposed by context or capital. Absorbing the client’s demands, works are constructed while facing a waning of traditional craft, but illustrate a construction culture in development. The exhibition gives insight – through a selection of case studies spanning generations of architectural practice – into the expectations, experience and expertise developed in various scales, locations, and climates.

ADAPTATION 应变 emerges in the revitalization of industrial heritage, as a response to building in remote geographies or through the modern interpretation of traditional spatial concepts. ADAPTATION 应变 is a mirror for Chinese architects, their production and context; a focused lens for outsiders to look at today’s evolution of the architectural profession in China.
