While on our way to the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, we passed along the Estoril Sol Residence, a 15 storey new housing complex with 110 dwellings, by Gonçalo Byrne Arquitectos. More background, pictures and video’s of the project via designboom, ArchDaily, Reynaers Aluminium and Joao Morgado.

On the official website – Estoril Sol Residence – architect Gonçalo Byrne provides following background to the project:

Working on the Estoril Sol Residence complex [was] like a kind of great urban sculpture on the scale of the valley’s landscape. It is a built up whole that clearly marks out the difference between the elevation of the sea and the elevation of the Valley, which is modelled fluidly and with openings that are big enough to interpenetrate with the Park’s green surface, and how much it increases can be seen from Cascais, and from the sea. I decided to put an end to the idea of a block; a tower. Regenerating the fabric of the cliff, the project is more of a landscape, or geographical feature, rather than architectural. The challenge I faced was the dialogue between the Cliff, the Valley and Nature, articulating itself as a Sculpture facing the sea.
