NAi China workshop | day II

NAi China Housing workshop | Monday April 25, 2011

The second day of the “NAi China Housing workshop” comprised of a series of housing-related project presentations by Dutch and Chinese architects, followed by discussions, brainstorms and sketching sessions. During the morning program, Mao Daqing 毛大庆 [Executive Vice President, Vanke Co Ltd, President of Beijing Vanke Co Ltd] introduced the operations and ambitions of VANKE 万科, followed by the Xianghe Project Introduction 香河项目介绍 by Zhao Feifei 赵菲菲 [Beijing Vanke Co Ltd].

During the day following questions, amongst many many others, were put on the table:

Do we really want an experiment with a focus on social housing in China on a strategically interesting location? Acknowledging a certain programmatic and locational separation of social and residential housing, could the nation-wide ambitions of the 10 million units be positively approached as a “temporal problem”? This leads to the question what do you do after or in 15 years from now on?

How can this workshop lead to an exercise in developing prototypes of housing that can be applied in other contexts, or at various scales?

The notion of community structure is of utmost importance in this project. The question is how to make a community coherent and diverse? And how to rebuild the existing community that is now living and working on the site of intervention?
