On Friday September 25, POROSITY C8studio came to a conclusion with an exhibit of the students’ work. Entitled E-SCAPE the two week workshop was a partnership between Professor Richard Goodwin’s Porosity Studio, and the COLLABOR8 project (C8), in collaboration with Donghua University (Shanghai) and COFA (Sydney). No Utopia!

Porosity Studio | Shanghai, September 25, 2009

The Porosity Studio was established by Professor Richard Goodwin in 1996 and provides a potential component of a student’s major study in final years from a range of disciplines: Fine Art, Design, Media Studies, Architecture, Urban Design and Engineering. In it, a multi-disciplinary practice is explored and students are able to test their individual practices at the scale of architecture and the city. The studio builds on the practice and research of Goodwin who is both artist and architect. The relationship between the city and public space remain key concerns for the studio.

C8 is an eight-week long fully online education initiative hosted by The Omnium Research Group and COFA Online that establishes a basis for collaborative online art and design projects between universities in Australia and China. The project aims to create awareness about the importance of cross cultural design practice by challenging students to work together to design surface graphics for sustainable applications in the development of contemporary ceramics, textiles, products and environments.

With the theme of E-SCAPE the 2009 POROSITY C8studio explored Shanghai as a city to test the notion of a “scape”:

The studio is not looking for Utopian visions for Shanghai. It seeks your engagement within the laboratory of interdisciplinary design and Shanghai as a city. This engagement involves the selection of a site or scale at which to work and for you to write your own brief for an imagined project. This project should seek to find immediate solutions or ways forward for an existing problem or “scape”.

Porosity Studio | Shanghai, September 25, 2009

On the POROSITY studio Vimeo-site an archive of the studio is currently in work, while the POROSITY C8studio-website will soon feature updates as well. Overall the exhibition presented a set of intriguing engagements with contemporary Shanghai; from a mapping of winning Mahjong combinations and strategies, over the girl with the black balloon hair drifting under an elevated subway, to urban chopstick interventions, imaginary collections and a reflection on how to make instant friends in Shanghai.

As mentioned before, MovingCities gave a lecture on September 18, half-way through the studio.
Urban Panorama Workshop | Macau, July 3, 2009

The afternoon chapter of Macau’s rooftop expedition (see morning tour) brought us to the rooftop of a residential building at Av. Ouvidor Arriaga, another one at Artur Tamagnini Barbosa and to the lounge bar ‘The View’. From the last one, located in The Sands complex at NAPE, one could see what happens when Alvaro Siza Vieira’s 1983 Macau City Expansion Plan meets the generic demands of the city’s gaming industry. We concluded the day at Guia Hill, where astronomer Tânia Sales Marques gave a short presentation.

Urban Panorama Workshop | View from the View | Macau, July 3, 2009

In order to scan Macau’s skyline in the most effective way, the Urban Panorama Workshop modus movandi was one bus and several elevators. Navigating through the dense urban tissue, along the Chinese border and its gaming shore, we explored the intensity of the peninsula while escaping from it once we hit the elevators, opened doors and roamed the rooftops. From there sensations of vertigo and the amazement of the strange urban disorder became sources of pleasure. Where, in most architectural projects, the roofs are thought off as structure to enclose space, it shouldn’t be to difficult to write an essay/manifesto plotting out its opposite potentialities. A roof is a roof and not a roof. But also not exactly the fifth facade. They are there, above the heads, under the feet, defying our understanding of them as flat GoogleEarth surfaces. Some snapshots.

Last Friday, THIS IS MY CITY 09-event was launched with a full day field trip along a selection of scenic Macau’s skyline spots. The Urban Panorama Workshop, a collaboration between MovingCities and Nuno Soares, made possible by Cultural Association +853, explored Macau’s urban image by taking the rooftops as locales for observation and interpretation.

Conceptually, the workshop explored lines of research and urban investigation set out in Kevin Lynch’s crucial “The Image of the City“-publication (MIT Press, 1960). Almost half a century after him postulated a series of insights and propositions into the empirical reading of the city, it is more than relevant to reconsider these in the context of rapid developing cities. In search for the spatial characteristics of Macau we have been looking into its image, much alike the three components Lynch identified:

An environmental image may be analyzed into three components: identity, structure, and meaning. It is useful to abstract these for analysis, if it is remembered that in reality they always appear together. A workable image requires first the identification of an object, which implies its distinction from other things, its recognition as a separable entity. This is called identity, not in the sense of equality with something else, but with the meaning of individuality or oneness. Second, the image must include the spatial or pattern relation of the object to the observer and to other objects. Finally, this object must have some meaning for the observer, whether practical or emotional. Meaning is also a relation, but quite a different one from spatial or pattern relation.

View from Monte Fortress | Macau, July 3, 2009

The movement through Macau led to a first mental map which was both Kevin Lynch -isch and David Lynch -isch in nature; structures twisted and turned being at once dominant, at other times distant and as we toured we tried to deal with the perceptual and perpetual collision of different skylines in one single image. Needless to tell we tried to do the impossible, but along the way we collected evidence, the base material onto which to work further upon the next day.

Part I – the morning tour – started at Albergue SCM from where we walked to Tap Seac Square to catch our fandango-colored bus. First stop was the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Center, the world’s 10th tallest free-standing tower featuring an 360º observation level, 223m above ground. Followed by a visit to the rooftop of a housing block in Penha, at Rua do Padre António, and ending at Monte Fortress, which was build in the early seventeenth century. Part II of the city tour will follow suit.

Filipina Heterotopia: (…) This piece is rooted in a socio-economic context, which can be witnessed in Hong Kong. Since the 1970’s, and the poor economic situation the government of Philippines has actively promoted and supported the migration in order to find work abroad. As a result, there is now a great number of Filipinas in Hong Kong, who came to find job as domestic helpers to take care of children, elderly, and of the household in general. As stated in their contract, they should live with their employees, and have a day of rest on Sunday usually. They usually gather on that day in open public spaces, outside their employee’s house.
Workshop Main Objective

A two-day workshop explores Macau’s urban landscape by investigating the relation between the visual quality and the mental image of the city which is held by its citizens. Using strategies of experimental and empirical field research along Macau’s rooftops and sightseeing spots, a parcour will form the set-up for an intensified collaborative design workshop. By reading Macau “from within” its territory, landmarks and new building geographies will be identified, laying focus on three components of the city’s skyline (character, structure, and meaning).

Through research and design this workshop’s main objective is to understand the potentialities of bringing new types of architectural approaches onto its territory, by reading and interpreting the current state and by projecting speculative designs, so to transform, strengthen and discuss its urban features. The expected outcome will be a “what if” scenario based on a series of optical transformations of Macau’s skyline.

Workshop Approach

Contrary to common belief, a city does not have one fixed and single skyline, as the urban environment is not a stable entity that can be solely understood from one viewpoint only. A myriad of perspectives determines its image.

By exploring Macau from a unique set of locations, from atop rooftops to other vista points, the workshop investigates what a series of skylines tell about Macau’s urban complexion.

What can be read in its horizon, not from outside the city, but from within, and how does this shape the understanding of the city?
How do singled-out architectures dominate the view and act as point of references?

The analysis and effects of physical and perceptible architectural constructions are one of the foundations for city design. The workshop uncovers the role of form in the creation of the city’s image. Investigating in research and design the shifting perception of architectural forms, the participants will bring their findings and speculation in relation with the future development of Macau.

Workshop Day Plan

PART I [Friday, July 03 | 09:30 – 20:00]

The first day of the workshop focuses on the visual quality of Macau. A tour along several rooftops, which aren’t commonly accessible, will offer a multi-perspective view from which design parameters will be distilled. Eight elevated outlooks, in the different boroughs of Macau Island, will form the locations to engage with Macau’s complex urban landscape. Impressions will be registered in the form of photography, video, sounds and sketching.

PART II [Saturday, July 04 | 10:00 – 18:00]

The second day concentrates on the analysis and design exercise.
Starting with a discussion amongst the participants about their experience, an initial analysis will be made by processing the collected material. The afternoon will be reserved to make a sharper reading and analysis of the state of affairs of Macau and to test a speculative architectural approach to the skyline, focusing on the relation between background and foreground, notions of singularity, form simplicity, dominance, directional differentiation, visual scope and meaning.
During the evening’s THIS IS MY CITY09, organization selected works (only) from the participants will be included in the Urban Panorama Workshop exhibition to be open. Furthermore, the works will be also included in a live event (co-produced by 86/33 LINK), which will be handed over to Beijing sound-artist DEAD J and visual jockey Chen Xiongwei, who will remix it in order to explore additional interactive skyline scenario’s.

PART III [Sunday, July 05 | 16:00 – 18:30]

The workshop will culminate on a third day encompassing a roundtable discussion with invited guests – including local architects, municipality actors, city-planners, artists – that are deeply intertwined with Macau’s future urban developments.
In this debate, formal dialogues amongst people that participate on the design of the city will be confronted and contrasted with the views and projections done by the workshop participants. The purpose is to trigger a creative debate about the contemporary image of Macau, based on uncovering future scenarios – stemming from empirical rooftop research and the new skyline scenarios developed during the workshop.

Urbanism, music & video from Macau/Hong Kong/Beijing for a three days’ event

The Albergue da Santa Casa da Misericórdia (澳門仁慈堂婆仔屋) will be holding on the next July 3 to 5, 2009, this year’s edition of the multidisciplinary event This Is My City (TIMC), which is an initiative from the Cultural Association +853, co-organized by Albergue and with the institutional support of the MSAR Cultural Institute and the Institute of European Studies of Macau.

The event, which has the aim of explore new ways of feeling the city, is divided in three moments: a workshop about urbanism, a round table to debate the questions to be raised throughout the workshop, and also a performance that will include music and video art.

Similarly to what happened last year, the main moments of TIMC will occur at Albergue, in São Lázaro Neighbourhood. And once again, artists and cultural agents from Macau and China will be together. The 2009 edition of TIMC will also count with the presence of an artist living in Hong Kong.

The Cultural Association +853 invited the project MovingCities, based in Beijing, to coordinate the URBAN PANORAMA workshop, which will be held during the three days of the event. Conceived by the architects Mónica Carriço and Bert de Muynck, with the local assistance of the architect Nuno Soares, the URBAN PANORAMA explores Macau’s urban landscape by investigating the relation between the cultural/media imaginaries and the concrete conditions of the everyday.

this is my city, this is my skyline!

On the first day of the workshop, the participants will do a research about the characteristics of the city on Macau’s rooftops and sightseeing spots. The collected material will then be analyzed and prepared in order to create an exhibition, which will be inaugurated on July 4, at 20:30, in the conference room of Albergue.

On July 5, 16:00, also at the conference room of Albergue, there will be a round table that will seat together the architects who held the workshop and several individualities experienced in urban management and design. All those interested in the subject are welcomed in the debate. The URBAN PANORAMA workshop is for people who want hands-on experiment and experience of the urban reality and that have some design and analytical skills: students, architects, urban planners, designers, artists, photographers, film-makers, practitioners, writers and all interested in debating the city.

TIMC is an invitation to feel and enjoy the city. Therefore, on the evening of July 4 there is a performance in Albergue with artists from Macau, Hong Kong and Beijing, which is co-produced by 86/33 LINK, a cultural association from the Chinese capital.

The performance starts with the opening of the exhibition URBAN PANORAMA. Then, Cedric Maridet will present his work, focused on field recordings, soundscape compositions, audio-vision and the construction of altered sonorous spaces. The French artist, who is living in Hong Kong, will bring to TIMC09 his approach about the Philippine community living in HKSAR.

After that, DEAD J will show what is being done in China in the electronic sounds’ field. Coming from Beijing, DEAD J is considered as one of the most interesting artists in the Chinese electronic music scene. During his performance, Chen Xiongwei, a VJ also from the Chinese metropolis, will manipulate images produced by the participants on the workshop URBAN PANORAMA.

On Monday May 25, Line13 Redux kicked off with a fieldtrip on Line13. Departing from the Dongzhimen subway station we moved to the first stop on the Northern section of this subway line, the Beiyuan subway station. From here we walked along dusty roads, large construction sites and a large canal to the Lishuiqiao subway station. Half a year after our previous walk in this area – see ‘Looping Line13‘ (December 2008) – it wasn’t difficult to understand in which direction this area is currently developing: it seems that in-between the Beiyuan and Lishuiqiao subway station one of Beijing’s largest residential housing development is currently under construction.

For an extensive documentation of the present state of this area, check the images on Line13 Redux | Fieldtrip (Beiyuan-Lishuiqiao).

Line 13 Superlinearity fieldtrip | Beijing, May 27, 2008

Throughout the past years MovingCities developed a couple of self-initiated investigations around Beijing’s Line13 and has been fortunate to develop some of its findings further by giving the aforementioned workshops. Our interest can be summed up as follows:

Line13 is the mobility spine that makes Beijing move. It is an elevated subway line cutting through large parts of the modern city. With Beijing’s attempts to spread its urban growth into a polycentric model, Line13 re-organizes this ambition; connecting nodes of polycentric development. Surrounding the line are zones where economical, sociological and cultural tensions co-exist.

Street market panorama (source: Carlos Gil/USF - click to enlarge)

From Lishuiqiao we took Line13 to the most Western stop on the Northern section, Longze subway station. Here the subway line intersects with the Badaling Expressway, a 70 kilometer highway connecting Beijing with the Great Wall. Since its construction in 1996 (finished in 2001), the Badaling Expressway has acted as an important attractor for urban development in the North-Western part of Beijing. Around the Longze subway station, where the expressway meets the subway line, four distinct and programmatically autonomous areas can be discerned; a semi-legal and self-built migrant village, an area called ‘car city’, a low-rise residential area and a high-rise upscale residential area.

For an extensive documentation of the present state of this area, check the images on Line13 Redux | Fieldtrip (Longze).

In the afternoon we headed to the Crossboundaries studio where the workshop took off. In an upcoming post we will provide background and the outcome of this short and intense Line13 Redux-workshop. Stay tuned.

At the same he is the director of Team D/E/S a company created to offer strategic design for sustainments:

A sustainment is something that has been designed to advance society’s ability to sustain the conditions of interdependence upon which the future depends. A sustainment might be a product, a policy, a work practice, a building or a built environment, or even a new industry. A sustainment is an incremental action taken now towards enhancing society’s ability to sustain itself and that with which it interacts and upon which it depends — including the relations between the natural and the artificial; the material and the immaterial; the economic and the cultural. ‘Sustainment’ is a concept alert to, and directive of, change and process. It is more aware of time than the more familiar idea of ‘sustainable development’.

His work focuses on the conceptual and experiential analysis of natural and perceptive phenomena, paying great attention to the relationship established between subjects and their environment. The project is nothing less than tantalizing, inspiring and poetic:

I’m researching the possibilities of realising flying structure which will reflect the sunlight in the urban areas around the Arctic circle. (…) The results of the research can later be applied in different fields, like, sustainable architecture, alternative energy sources, aerial transport, etc. What will be visible as an end result will be a copy of the Sun itself, a copy so close it’ll be impossible to deferent it from the real sun.

The second week of the City Move Interdesign-workshop mainly consisted of fine-tuning and structuring the concepts around which each group were working. After a week in which some groups tried to find a common ground (which not seldom led to meta-discursive situations in which the prime question was “how to talk about what we want to talk about”), there were short presentations, visits from the local community, interviews for local newspapers and productive pop-up performance in front of the camera. At times the sports arena in Malmberget (where the City Move Interdesign workshop took place) had the feeling of a laboratory, a prison, a showroom and television studio.

At the same time there was still a lot of room for experiments, finding new methods of working that aspired to transcend the demanding democratic nature of creative collaboration and short scans of the city of Malmberget, the Ground Zero of the City Move Workshop. Our love for heights, our desire to hover above the horizon brought us to the roof of Malmbergets finest almost-modernistic housing slab.

The Green Group | road trip Gällivare - Kiruna

In search for a location where a new city could be build, the Green Group went exploring the area North of Malmberget. On March 27, a 250 kilometers road trip to the border of the Gällivare and Kiruna region ended in the a small city called Svappavaara where another LKAB mine was found. LKAB is an international high-tech minerals group, one of the world’s leading producers of upgraded iron ore products for the steel industry and a growing supplier of industrial minerals products to other sectors.

LKAB | Svappavaara

This is the same mining company that is responsible for the activities in, under and around the city of Malmberget, and has lead to some problems for which the City Move Interdesign-workshop is working on solutions and strategies to get out the stakeholders deadlock which keeps the local population in a state of insecurity about their present and future housing conditions. A solution to this problem could be complex and simple at the same time; to give up what doesn’t work and compensate the local population for their relocation. To understand who would be responsible for this to happen, one doesn’t need to be a genius; LKAB is wholly owned by the Swedish state and recently reported their 2008 record profit as follows (10 kronor = plus minus 1 euro):

LKAB’s operating income for the full year 2008 increased by 68 percent and amounted to 10,327 million kronor. This is the best result in the company’s history. The Board suggests that dividends paid to the owner, Swedish state, for the year 2008 will total 2,800 MSEK.

To deal with this situation where the Swedish state could have the amazing opportunity to grasp this opportunity of forced evacuation of Malmberget, to start a new type of city, based on a different mode of planning, organization and culture, the Green Group was working around the idea to make a new beginning, a fresh start, a new city located North of Malmberget. A couple of snapshots of our journey.

There is a hole in the city of Malmberget. Since a couple of decades the underground mining activity created an expanding crater in the heart of this small city. Due to its growth, some drastic measures have been taken in the past; the population that once lived around the pit had to be moved, but not only people moved, but also their houses. Snail-wise (both in speed of relocation, decision making as in the form houses being moved by trucks) this process has hollowed the sense of community in this once pioneering mining city.

Moving Houses | Malmberget

After this the 40 participants were divided in 6 different groups and started defining their approach.

MovingCities was divided over two groups. The Green Group (which included Bert de Muynck) decided to spend their first day on location and conducted some field research in the area South of the Pit; interviewing the local residents who are facing relocation on a short term. The Dark Blue Group (which included Mónica Carriço) decided to stay inside, define their interests and went on the third day on a field to the neighboring city of Gällivare.
On Monday March 23, the City Move Interdesign workshop was launched. On our first day we were informed about the workshop assignment and undertook our first fieldtrip. Destination was the city of Malmberget and the mines that are hollowing out the grounds underneath its territory.

Malmberget is a city that is located approximately 100 kilometers above the arctic circle, in the North of Sweden. During the last decades the territory is in a fierce deadlock, the result of different interests between the stakeholders (local municipality, the mining company and the Swedish government) that is forcing the local population in a state of insecurity which could easily summed up as the “should I stay or should I go?”-dilemma. Here, during the coming two weeks, the City Move Interdesign is taking place.

For now, a couple of snapshots of the first day which included a drive around Malmberget (advertising itself as the Mining Capital of Europe), a visit to the underground (the mine), another visit to the open pit mine (which is spread out on an area of about 28 km2) and a synopsis of the workshop assignment:

The town of Malmberget is a part of the Gällivare municipality and for nearly 40 years it has been involved in a drawn out and, at times, painful moving process as a result of the expansion of the mining industry. The current community is suffering as empty buildings and the gradual deterioration into a slum has negatively affected the quality of life.

increasingly residents of Malmberget are forced to move from their apartments and homes to other areas. It is difficult to say how long this process will continue. It is clear, however, that increasing numbers of residents will be affected in the coming years. Since the 1970s, the population has fallen by more than half and today Malmberget has about 600 residents.

After a short introduction by Robin Edman, chief executive of the Swedish Industrial Design Foundation (SVID), the group entered a small airplane which took us from Stockholm Arlanda to Lapland Airport, the last one positioned close to the town of Gällivare. In this small city, located 100 kilometers above the Arctic Circle, we will during the coming weeks investigate and explore how to move a city. More updates on the workshop progress, content and participants, hailing from 18 different countries, will follow soon, for now a couple of snapshots.

An interdesign is a two-week workshop where an international team of industrial designers and professionals from other disciplines come together to work collaboratively on a predetermined issue of regional and/or international significance. A host country identifies a particular problem specific to their country whose solution is applicable in other international contexts. Since the first interdesign workshop in 1971, Interdesign themes have ranged from being purely product design to opening discussions on general topics.

City Move Interdesign is not about moving houses…it’s about moving societies!

From our temporary location above the Arctic Circle (North Pole), we will be posting on the progress of the workshop. More information can be found on the website of the Swedish Industrial Design Foundation. The City Move Interdesign workshop will attempt “to develop creative solutions for a serious problem” with following objective:

In the northern part of Sweden the mining industry continues to expand and, in certain areas, the ground is crumbling under entire cities. This poses enormous challenges to the survival of such cities and may force their populations to relocate. But is it possible to relocate whilst safeguarding and transferring parts of, or entire societies? How can this be done effectively? This is the challenge set for City Move Interdesign.

Once merely understood in terms of agriculture, today information, energy, labour, and landscape, among others, can be farmed. Farming harnesses the efficiency of collectivity and community. Whether cultivating land, harvesting resources, extracting energy or delegating labor, farming reveals the interdependencies of our globalized world. Simultaneously, farming represents the local gesture, the productive landscape, and the alternative economy. The processes of farming are mutable, parametric, and efficient. From terraforming to foodsheds to crowdsourcing, farming often involves the management of the natural mediated by the technologic. Farming, beyond its most common agricultural understanding is the modification of infrastructure, urbanisms, architectures, and landscapes toward a privileging of production.
