The objective of this 3-day workshop is to instigate a discussion – through architectural design – about the present state of and future opportunities for educational environments in China. Through the incorporation of a new/needed social agenda – combining different age and social groups [e.g. in a new type of intermixed school], the framework or school design will be broadened, thus leading to unexpected, and mutually reinforcing, results.
Hence, the title: School+ WORKSHOP.

In order to make it happen, participants will investigate this broad topic, while focusing on a real-site in Beijing, in the vicinity of Tsinghua University. Too, the workshop has the objective to open up the possibility of incorporating various social and educational groups, that have, due to their proximity, a socio-economical benefit in terms of transfer of knowledge between one group and the other.

By combining the Finnish experience in architectural educational design [part of its excellent educational system] – with emerging trends and obstacles related to Chinese schools, the workshop targets to explore a new field of cultural, social and architectural interaction.

The School+WORKSHOP will discuss the design of either temporary type(s) of educational environments; either develop parasite spaces attached to an original school – so to create a more flexible educational setting. By incorporating different social groups in relation to spatial educational design, the workshop will target the notion of social responsibility and its potential to create an all-encompassing learning experience for a mixed group of urban inhabitants.

educational environments,  spatial design, experimental school,  vocational school,  educational toolbox, neighbourhood interaction, age-group mixing, migrant children, empty-nest elderly,
